We went to the town of Bowral for the weekend of 3/4 May to visit friends. Bowral is one of those beautiful little towns that we drove through on our way home from Sydney last weekend, where the trees are all turning colour. After arriving in time for a lovely lunch, we headed to the historic village of Berrima, with lots of cute shops, cafes, antique places, and a great lolly shop. We then drove out to a new tourist site (opened just in March of this year), called the illawarra fly tree top walk. This is one of only four of these types of things in Australia, and it is a walk on a metal walkway through the treetops of the forest. Most of the walk is about 22 m above the forest floor, and the two furthest ends are cantelevered out, so they were a bit bouncy. In the middle was a tower we could climb that rose up to 45 m above the forest floor and was accessed by 106 steps spiralling around the concrete support column. The view from here (and the rest of the walk) was magnificent - we could see all the way to the ocean, to Lake Illawarra and the city of Wollongong beyond. We had a beautiful, clear day, too.

On Sunday, after mass and more visiting with our friends and their children, we went to the Bradman Museum (Don Bradman was a famous Aussie cricket player), where there was a cricket game going on. John and our friend went into the museum while myself and the girls went on a nice horse drawn carriage ride around the town. We then went to a monastery that makes wine (did a little tasting) and delicious jams, fig and plum at the moment. Back through the Kangaroo Valley (see last post) and home in time for bed.
