Kuranda

On Thursday, 27 April we took a cable car, called the Sky Rail, from Cairns up and over the rainforest to a little town called Kuranda. We were in a pod that could fit up to 6 people, suspended on a cable up above the forest canopy that travels 7.5 km, with two stops on the way.

The first was at a station called Red Peak, and we dis- embarked and were able to go on a naturalist- guided boardwalk tour thorugh the rainforest. It was nice and cool in the forest, and smelled wonderful - very strong and earthy. The next leg of the trip took us to Barron Falls, where we were again allowed off to have a look at these spectacular falls in the Barron River.

One more trip in the cable car and we were in Kuranda. It was pretty, and very touristy, with many souvenir shops, Aboriginal art shops, opal shops, cafes, and a couple of markets. We had 2 1/2 hours here to wander around. There was also a venom zoo, but we didn't have the time! We returned to Cairns via the Kuranda Historic Railway, that winds its way back down the Barron River Canyon.
